Andalusian giant donkey

The Andalusian giant donkey originates from the province Córdoba in Andalusia, Spain. This breed has a robust and harmonic shape, recognizable by it’s grey-white pattern also known as dapple-grey.

The story of development of this breed is supposed to date back 3.000 years ago and should be related to the Egyptian giant donkeys, who were brought from Africa to Spain. For centuries this breed was the most precious donkey breed in Spain which was not allowed to leave the country. Therefore, it is notable that in 1785 the Spanish King Karl III. sent two stallions as a so called “Royal Gift” to the American President George Washington. With only a population of around 500, the Andalusian giant donkey breed is in danger of extinction.
