The singing cook of Schloss Niederweiden
An epicurean – not to say “Lucullan” – chamber play with singing
In 1754, Prince Joseph Friedrich of Saxe-Hidburghausen was forced to sell his hunting lodge of Schloss Niederweiden. He put on such a feast lasting four days for the guests of honour Maria Theresa and Emperor Francis I of Lorraine that it successfully persuaded them to purchase the lodge. At the last minute a singer in the opera performance cancelled and the cook, Katharina Luckner, jumped in. Her wonderful voice and not least her cooking talent pleased the royal couple so much that they bought the palace and the singing cook with it, who from then on called herself Caterina Luculla. As accompanying entertainment at a soup dinner in the Game Kitchen, Caterina Luculla, played by Ulla Pilz, will sing for you and tell you about the exhilarating feasts and a few spicey stories about goings-on at the Court of Maria Theresa.
