All film and photo recordings are subject to approval.

Please note that in addition to the daily and general media coverage, the Schönbrunn Group locations are also popular photo and film locations (series, documentaries, feature films, etc.).

The film and photo team is pleased to help you with all film and photo projects that are not part of current reporting.

Before you start your film and photo work at the locations of the Schönbrunn Group, you need an official permit and a contract.

Indoor shoots

Schönbrunn Palace, Sisi Museum, Vienna Furniture Museum:

Inside the state rooms and show rooms, it is strictly forbidden to take photographs or to make any recordings during the opening hours (also applies to private purposes). Interior shots can only be taken before or after the regular opening hours.

Vienna Furniture Museum:

Filming and photographing is not permitted in the "Prinz Eugen" and "Maria Theresia" rooms and in the special exhibition.

Valid for Schloss Schönbrunn, Sisi Museum Vienna Furniture Museum:
 

  • Filming may only be carried out with battery-powered light or hand-held floodlights (low voltage 12 volt per lamp head, not exceeding 100 volt: no UV, cold light). Direct illumination of original materials, wallpapers and/or paintings is prohibited.
  • There is an absolute prohibition on the use of flash-light for photography.
  • All approved superstructures, rails, tripods and ladders must be underlaid with panels or protective felt to protect the floor.
  • Heat protection mats are to be placed under approved headlights and live plug connections. Power and other cables must be covered trip-safe.
  • For curatorial and security reasons, the windows and shutters may not be opened.
  • Filming/Photographing behind the barriers is not permitted.
  • Rooms closed by special barriers (glass doors) may be neither opened nor entered.
  • The furniture may be neither used nor moved.
  • Dramatic scenes are not permitted.
  • There is a strict prohibition on smoking and food in the entire display area.
  • All instructions issued by supervisory personnel must be complied with.
  • Staff members of the film and photo teams must remain with their teams and may only move away when accompanied by a supervisor.
  • The production must not damage the image or security of Schloß Schönbrunn Kultur- und Betriebsges.m.b.H. (SKB) in any way; in particular no security measures or devices may be shown. Furthermore, we will not permit any recording which may offend public morals, or which could be interpreted as racist, extreme right-wing, or intended to incite violence.
  • In the event of a failure to observe the conditions of use the producer shall be required to pay a penalty of € 4.000 per infringement to the SKB. The SKB is entitled to claim damages in excess of this penalty.
  • Appropriate reference to the respective SKB location as the location for filming must be made in the film, and it must at the very least be named in the credits, using at least the wording: „Filmed on location: Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna“, „Filmed on location: Sisi Museum, Vienna“ or „ Filmed on location: Möbel Museum, Wien“ respectively.

Outdoor shoots

Schönbrunn Palace: 

Photographs of Schönbrunn may not be distributed and sold on picture agencies.
 

Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna Furniture Museum: 

Outdoor shoots for private purposes are free of approval.

Valid on the grounds of Schönbrunn Palace:
 

  • Fences and barriers are not allowed.
  • Our visitors have priority. Please be considerate!
  • It is forbidden to climb or sit on, or make similar use, of fountains, statues, monuments and other structures.
  • Climbing over barriers or fences is not permitted.
  • It is forbidden to step into the lawns or flower-beds.
  • Balloons are not allowed neither in the Park, nor inside the Palace.
  • Driving on the Meidlinger and Hietzinger area roads is only permitted at walking pace (passers-by, children).
  • Driving into the park area is not permitted.
  • There is a general prohibition on parking in the Ehrenhof (Parade Court)

Reproductions and Photo Enquiries

The Schönbrunn Group avails of a large photograph archive and the imaging copyright for the art and cultural holdings and property in its ownership and which have been transferred to it for preservation. Archived here are digital data, ektachromes and negatives of the photographs of room views and objects from its own holdings and those that have been transferred.


Approval has to be obtained before an intended reproduction.

The reproduction charge depends on purpose, number of copies, format, language and distribution area. Processing may take up to 3 weeks. The more targeted the requests are, the shorter the processing time.

CHARGES FOR USE PICTORIAL RIGHTS

The photograph archive of the Schönbrunn Group contains photographs of the entire complex of Schönbrunn, its gardens and garden objects, also the palace and its interior. Furthermore, the photograph archive encompasses the Imperial Apartments in the Vienna Hofburg and the Imperial Silver Collection. It documents the continuous changes since the late nineteenth century until today. The room-view photographs of the Ceremonial Rooms are constantly updated after restoration and furnishing reconstructions.
